Eisenhower PALS curate picture book playlist

Eisenhower Middle School students in the Peer Assistance Leadership and Service (PALS) program are on a mission to inspire the next generation of young readers. The group is currently curating a picture book playlist on YouTube that features PALS reading a book for elementary-aged students.

“I believe it’s important to connect with our younger students so they can see that even though we are in middle school, we still use reading strategies that we were taught in elementary,” said eighth-grader Amanda Benavides. “I love how we can help make reading fun!”

Students are in the process of practicing and recording their read-along videos. Once the playlist is finished, it will be shared with Eisenhower’s feeder elementary schools. PALS teacher Kara Leyva got the idea by watching picture book read-along videos with her son.

“Every night, I show my son a read-aloud from Storyline Online,” said Leyva. “I want our elementary feeder schools to see kids just like them using characteristics of good readers. Also, I thought it would be neat for them to see students from the middle school that they will potentially attend.”
