Colonial Hills students turkey trot and donate dinner

Right now, at Colonial Hills Elementary school, there’s a big turkey sitting outside the gym. The sign in front of the friendly fowl says, “Blessed.” It’s an important message.

Inside the gym, there’s another turkey. It’s sitting on Coach Terri Pitts’ head. She’s doing what she can to get the kids excited about Thanksgiving. She’s teaching them the Turkey Tango. Then she sends the students outside for a one-mile turkey trot. She’s big on themes.

Back in the gym, on the far wall, there’s another turkey. Its fall-colored feathers span several feet and are decorated with the names of the students in the class. This turkey may be the most important one in the gym. Each feather represents a canned good brought in by a student. This food will eventually help fill a large red bin sitting at the front of the class. That bin will be delivered to the San Antonio Food Bank. Then, the food that filled the bin, brought by the students at Colonial Hills, will be given to a family in need, so they can have something to eat on Thanksgiving Day.

It’s not your typical PE lesson, but like so many other lessons in PE, it’s good for the heart.
