Madison’s Laurie Friesenhahn recognized by TAHPERD

Excellence is a habit for Laurie Friesenhahn. She’s been inspiring North East ISD students in the classroom, in the gym and on the softball field for 20 years. Seventeen of her 20 years teaching and coaching have been at Madison High School.

“I think the reason I have stayed in NEISD is because I have met and been supported by such wonderful people in my teaching career,” said Friesenhahn. “I also love the students and athletes I have been able to coach and teach in the Madison area.”

Friesenhahn has much to be proud of, but her role in Madison’s Outdoor Adventure PE class is a particular point of pride for the veteran coach. Her colleagues in the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (TAHPERD) were so impressed with her commitment and professionalism, they named her the 2020 Recreation Professional of the Year.

“I felt very humbled and honored to have a statewide organization acknowledge my hard work and dedication to my students,” said Friesenhahn. “NEISD has some of the best resources available to teach the Outdoor Adventure PE class. I believe the resources available to me have taken my class to another level and made me eligible for awards like the one that has been bestowed upon me.”

Friesenhahn will be honored during TAHPERD’s virtual awards ceremony on Friday, Dec. 4. Congratulations Laurie!
