The COVID-19 shutdown kept many families, students and workers off the road this year, but the dangers of distracted driving remain. The transition to virtual learning prompted Johnson High School's Smart Driving Club to adapt its outreach methods. One new addition is a digital billboard on U.S. Highway 281, encouraging drivers to keep their eyes on the road.
"The world is constantly changing as we are going back to school and work," said Ethan Waters, Smart Driving Club President. "One thing hasn't changed and that's our message. We will continue to share our safe driving message whether it's in person or virtual. Please never drive distracted or impaired."
Administrators at Johnson worked alongside the group to create two parking spots for the "Safe Driver of the Week" on campus. The club also collaborated with San Antonio Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to create a flyer reminding drivers that Bexar County has a cell phone usage ordinance in place. Three-thousand of those flyers were distributed in English and Spanish.
"Virtual learning has impacted our club this year, but we have still found ways to reach out in our community," said Waters. "Since the club could not host its seventh annual safe driving event during the week of homecoming, we developed safe driving messages to reach the drivers right where they are. We are placing safe driving messages in the ground right at the stoplight or intersection."
Roadblocks are no match for the Smart Driving Club. Their work continues, and the group is more than ready to educate drivers about the dangers and consequences of driving distracted.
