NEISD bus driver finds renewed sense of community

NEISD bus driver finds renewed sense of community The North East ISD Transportation team shuttles thousands of students across San Antonio every day. Our drivers offer safe, reliable transportation to school, practice, concerts, field trips and more to eligible students in the District.

Safety is our top priority and NEISD is thankful to the drivers who make our students feel safe, secure and valued during their journey to and from school.

Please help us celebrate the NEISD Transportation team #theNEISDway during National School Bus Safety Week.

All the signs pointed to North East ISD for bus driver Merced Espinosa. He was at a crossroads in life when he drove by Madison High School over the summer and noticed a school bus with a sign on it.

“I was a salesperson for a concrete business before this,” said Espinosa. “I was also involved in a trucking business. When COVID hit, people quit buying and things slowed down. I was driving by Madison High School when I saw a sign on the side of a bus that NEISD was hiring.”

A chance sighting inspired Espinosa to apply to be a bus driver at NEISD.

He had no idea his new job would come with a renewed sense of community.

“It feels more personal because you get to know your community and the people in your community,” said Espinosa. “I like the driving but I really like dealing with the teachers and students. They’re helping you, you’re helping them and that’s what I enjoy. It’s a team effort.”

The NEISD Transportation team prides itself on its ability to train drivers with no prior experience. Whether you’re a veteran, retiree or looking to start a new career – there’s a place for you at NEISD.

Just ask Merced Espinosa.

“It’s been a great experience so far and I think it’s going to be a great experience as I continue with it,” said Espinosa. “I like dealing with the kids the most. That’s my favorite part of the job.”
