Krueger celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month through art
Krueger Middle School theatre students aren’t letting the pandemic stifle their creativity. Despite being socially distant and learning virtually, they have continued performing. Over the past month, they have put together pantomime performances and monologues celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.
“We use this celebration as a theme to research a historical figure and explore the characterization process in a performance,” explained Theatre teacher Hidie Cabral. “The students were positively inspired by Marcel Marceau and his art of silence.”
The students created monologues highlighting the lives of professional golfer Lee Trevino, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Activist Cesar Chavez. Cabral has been so impressed with her students’ resilience and desire to continue performing despite the obstacles in front of them.
“Theatre is action. Students are actively creating stages at home, practicing their make up just like they will do for a show,” said Cabral. “What keeps me smiling and strong every day is my students’ performances, and parents engaged in supporting their acting work. My kids deserve the healing power of theatre.”
