Colonial Hills gets creative with family fitness
Family Fitness Nights are one of the highlights on the calendar at Colonial Hills Elementary School.
“We plan the night when the weather gets cooler, and just before Daylight Saving occurs, so we have more daylight,” explained Colonial Hills P.E. teacher Terri Pitts.
It is usually full of all sorts of activities so students can show their parents what they have learned and how good they are at different physical activities.
“We do scooter boards, tetherball, volleyball, hula hooping, jump roping and various other activities,” says Pitts. “The students are so proud when they teach and show their family members different activities.”
This year it’ll look different. There won’t be a big gathering in the gym or on the playground this weekend, but Pitts is making sure there is still fun to be had by her students that will engage their families too. She’s planned neighborhood scavenger hunts and posted videos of different activities families can do together to get up and get a little exercise.
“Exercise is especially important for families during the COVID-19 pandemic because it can reduce stress, prevent weight gain and boost the immune system,” explains Pitts.

In the meantime, Pitts is working on more activities for families to enjoy during future Family Fitness Nights.
