#NEISDcares | MacArthur students offer help without saying a word

Virtual learning is testing all of us this year, but North East ISD teachers and students are adapting and truly going out of their way to help others.

“Since more students were struggling this year and needed help, I asked the administration if my (American Sign Language) ASL Honor Society students could tutor remotely,” said MacArthur High School ASL Teacher Tim Kitterman. “They approved it, and we currently have 20 students receiving tutoring from about 16 ASL Honor Society students.”

Sophomore Ciara Cardon is one of those MacArthur students tutoring other ASL students.

“I love to teach others,” said Cardon. “It makes me feel really good. I get really excited when I meet with my ASL tutor.”

Junior Lauren Daniels feels the same way and is just so glad she can help others right now.

“I like helping people when I have the skills and resources to help, and some people just need that extra push to get them motivated or help them understand,” said Daniels.

Kitterman couldn’t be prouder of his students and admits he couldn’t do it without them.

“Sometimes when a teacher like myself can’t get through to a student, one of these ASL HS students can get through,” said Kitterman. “This program shows how students mature in this program and not only want to help others but also know how to help them.”
