Support bunnies help calm nerves at Jackson-Keller

The transition back to the classroom has come with changes for students, teachers and parents. While it can be stressful and even anxiety-inducing for some, there’s no shortage of support across every campus in North East ISD. Students returning to Jackson-Keller Elementary School each received a gift meant to help them manage and regulate their feelings.

Students in kindergarten, first and second grade have their own support bunny to lean on during the day. Third-, fourth- and fifth-graders were welcomed with smiley face stress balls and fidget gadgets.

“Our Positive Behavior Interventions Support (PBIS) team met prior to the school opening to establish goals to assist students with the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) component,” said Anna Nicolai, Jackson-Keller Principal. “For example, the bunny is the student’s personal friend who helps with the phase-in procedures. Students have become creative with the ways they are naming and caring for their bunny.”

SEL is part of the framework of the learning process at NEISD. Each campus has a team dedicated to instilling these practices in many different ways, from support bunnies to counseling.
