‘Readbox’ Recommends: MacArthur adds interactive e-book rental option

North East ISD students have access to thousands of e-books through the Sora app. Sifting through so many titles can be a little intimidating, but MacArthur High School librarian Janelle Schnacker found an interactive way to streamline the process. Students can find 20 'Readbox' posters hanging on walls across campus. In the vein of Redbox movie rentals, each poster features several book options for students to choose from.

"When students scan the QR code for each book, they are taken to the book's information and checkout screen in our Sora e-book collection," said Schnacker. "We started with popular fiction e-book 'Readboxes' in our main courtyard and cafeteria areas. Then we strategically placed them in departmental hallways. For example, we provided a true crime 'Readbox' outside of our law enforcement classroom and poetry and memoir 'Readboxes' in our English department hallway."

Students receiving services in an Alternative Learning Environment (ALE) have joined in on the fun too. With the click of a button, students can access interactive read-along and audiobook options.

"We wanted to provide a similar experience for our ALE students who have come back to campus," said Schnacker. "We plan to keep the 'Readboxes' posted around campus long after phase-in is complete."

Thank you to the NEISD librarians who find unique ways to keep reading fun and accessible to all.
