Ed White teacher discovers calling where she least expected

It's not uncommon for people to discover a career by accident. Elizabeth Tennant never dreamed she would end up teaching at Ed White Middle School. But she's thankful she did because now she can't picture herself anywhere else.

"I never expected to teach at Ed White or teach math and somehow they both chose me," said Tennant. "Ed White is an untapped resource with a wealth experience in our District. It's a community of educators and family like no other."

Tennant is a proud product of North East ISD. She attended Northwood Elementary School, Garner Middle School and MacArthur High School. During and shortly after college, teaching was more of an idea than a legitimate option. But Tennant couldn't shake her passion for teaching and that led her back to the District that helped raise her.

"I was blessed with some amazing educators growing up in NEISD and thought the best way to give back to them was to find a way to make an impact in my own classroom in the same District," said Tennant. "Ed White is my second home at this point."

Tennant is thriving alongside her Ed White family. She teaches the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) course and sponsors the Peer Assistance Leadership and Service (PALS) program. Through AVID, she helps students identify and set future college or career goals. The PALS program is built with a foundation of service and empowers students to make a difference on and off campus.

"My focus is to teach students to be scholars, stay organized, ask quality questions and be leaders," said Tennant. "In my mind, if I can help one student learn to appropriately advocate for themselves and realize the power in their voice, I am successful."

Ultimately, Tennant is passionate about helping Ed White students find their voice in a world of noise. And she's forever grateful for the opportunity to use hers to make a difference at NEISD.
