Harris student art hangs in virtual museum

Spring events like Night Gallery and Young Masters typically showcase artwork from thousands of North East ISD students. While an in-person exhibit wasn’t an option this year, teachers at Harris Middle School found a way to highlight their hard work online.

Art teacher Jose Baldizon teamed up with librarian Cheryl Stewart and Instructional Technology Specialist (ITS) Lauren Snyder to create an interactive virtual art museum.

“My heart was broken in a way because I knew these students wouldn’t be recognized the way they deserved,” said Baldizon. “When Stewart came to me with the idea for the website, I thought it was wonderful and would allow for some of that creativity to be seen!”

Stewart plays a key role in helping students research and map out art projects that often end up displayed in the Harris library for everyone on campus to enjoy.

“Once students finished their poems and pieces, the artwork was supposed to be displayed in the library,” said Stewart. “Being pulled apart physically by COVID-19 doesn’t stop our NEISD collaborative spirit. So, even though we are apart, we are still working together.”

While distance learning has been an adjustment for everyone involved, Baldizon hopes we can all learn something from our time apart.

“Actually speaking to others and enjoying conversations gives me hope that we won’t take for granted the time we spend with friends and people because things can change so fast,” said Baldizon. “I think these kids will remember this forever, and they’ll really love being back at school as soon as ‘normal’ returns.”
