#NEISDcares | Harris teacher uses sewing skills to help others

Paying it forward comes naturally to Harris Middle School English teacher Brittany Griffith. In fact, it’s part of her routine in and out of the classroom. Like many, the coronavirus pandemic inspired Griffith to put her sewing skills to the test by assembling hundreds of facemasks.

“When my mother was teaching me to sew as a kid, she explained that you just never know when you’ll have to make do with what you’ve got, and you should always be prepared to do things yourself,” said Griffith. “As usual, she was right! Becoming part of the mask-making brigade for me, like many others, was a really easy choice when I saw how great the need in our community was becoming.”

Every mask that Griffith has stitched together has gone to someone in need, from children and teens living in group homes to nurses battling COVID-19 on the front line. She also sent masks to the staff at Harris who are hard at work during distance learning. To date, Griffith has assembled 450 masks and plans to continue showing how #NEISDcares.
