ISA students reach out to nursing home residents

Service to others is a way of life that is fully embraced at the International School of the Americas (ISA). During a time of self-isolation, Luis Tovar, Sarah Landry, Ashley Renner and Peyton Chandler wanted to find a way to connect with people who may be struggling during the quarantine. The group was able to do just that by reaching out to nursing home residents at The Heights on Huebner over video chat.

Tovar and his classmates spoke with a senior citizen about his time growing up to gain a little perspective.

“We wanted to find a way to be safe but also stay involved in the community,” said Tovar. “Our inspiration was to become more aware about how senior citizens lived their childhood in comparison to us. While we were speaking with residents, we realized the world around us is changing, and the world has already changed.”

Nursing homes across the country have been forced to close their doors to visitors due to the coronavirus pandemic. Digital Media teacher Mitzi Moore was touched, but not surprised to see ISA students reaching out to others during these uncertain times.

ISA strives to create global citizens that recognize perspectives of others and take action to improve the world,” said Moore. “When I witness the persistence and compassion of my students, I am pleased but not surprised. They’ve been this way all year.”

Thank you Luis, Sarah, Ashley and Peyton for showing how #NEISDcares.
