NEISD offers resources to help parents navigate the cyberworld

Information is power, and in the technology age it’s constantly evolving. Some parents feel like they are always playing catch up when it comes to the new apps available for their children to download onto their phone. North East ISD has resources in place to empower parents to start candid conversations with their children about the choices and consequences that come with operating a smartphone.

Cindi Navado attended a workshop titled, “Welcome to the Cyberworld: Not everything is fun and games” on Friday, Feb. 14. The District offered this free class as a resource for parents interested in learning more about the popular apps students use on a daily basis.

“It’s very important because your kids have friends and their friends make it seem so cool to be on whatever app they’re interested in, especially when they’re playing games,” said Navado. “It’s very scary because I don’t know a lot so if I come from a position of being informed I can handle the position better.”

The workshop was hosted by Clarrisa Zamora of the San Antonio Behavioral Healthcare Hospital. She discussed the importance of setting boundaries and rules for internet use at a young age and offered tools and resources that help parents monitor devices and protect their children. She also talked at length about laws regarding online extortion, impersonation, harassment and more.

NEISD’s Family Engagement Program offers frequent seminars and workshops about a variety of topics during the school year. Click here for more information.
