Official Visit: NEISD takes the lead in merging nutrition and learning

Colorful, creative and healthy meals are part of the daily routine for every North East ISD student. The nutritional value of every breakfast, lunch and snack consumed across the District is taken into consideration, and meals packed with flavor and healthy ingredients are crafted with the student in mind. NEISD’s School Nutrition Services team continues to meet and surpass the high standards students, community members and state and federal officials set for them. On Friday, Jan. 17, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Sonny Perdue visited Castle Hills Elementary School to sample the menu and discuss current nutrition requirements in place for students across the nation.

Sec. Perdue entered the lunch line with second-grade students and sat with them to eat a delicious lunch of breaded chicken drumsticks, cheesy garlic potatoes, steamed broccoli, Texas grapefruit and blueberries cream. After lunch, Sec. Perdue joined a roundtable with Texas Commissioner of Agriculture Sid Miller, NEISD representatives, and nutrition services representatives from across Texas and several other states.

“It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to voice concerns to the people who actually make decisions,” said Sharon Glosson, Executive Director of NEISD School Nutrition Services. “I think it’s a rare opportunity and a great honor. We’re not only speaking for North East ISD, we’re speaking for our colleagues in other districts around the nation.”

During his stop at Castle Hills, Secretary Perdue announced several changes and improvements that are meant to offer more flexibility to those serving healthy and appetizing meals in school cafeterias across the nation. Click here to learn more about the USDA announcement.
