Churchill freshman launches new holiday tradition

There’s a new tradition in the works at Churchill High School. A simple idea from freshman Sydney Martin turned into a plan of action when she asked science teacher Teresa Hodan for help. The two recruited Churchill students to create holiday cards to be delivered to San Antonio’s Methodist Children’s Hospital.

“Lately, I’ve just been wanting to help people and it must be horrible to have to spend your holiday in the hospital sick and not have anything to do,” said Martin. “I thought it’d be nice for them to get some cards and hopefully brighten their spirits a little bit.”

Martin and her peers could be doing anything with their free time, but they are committed to doing their part to help others in need. This culture and belief system is nurtured by supportive teachers like Hodan who are ready to encourage them through every idea and obstacle.

Martin is excited to deliver dozens of handcrafted holiday cards at Methodist Children’s Hospital and she expects next year’s batch to be even bigger.

“I’m hoping it gets bigger each year,” said Martin. “It’s really nice knowing that people are willing to help others and work together to do things to help people in need.”
