MacTEACH pays it forward during season of giving

Service is the calling that students in MacArthur High School’s MacTEACH program are always ready to answer. This holiday season, the program’s PTSD Ambassadors teamed up with San Antonio’s Broken Warriors Angels, Inc. to give back to homeless veterans at VFW Post 76.

MacArthur students helped raise more than $1,300 to purchase t-shirts, underwear and socks and also served a barbeque lunch to the veterans. Free medical and mental health clinics were also available at the event, in addition to free haircuts, coats, blankets and other essentials.

“As I served the homeless people, I couldn't help but think about how many more homeless people there are beyond what I can comprehend,” said senior Sylvia Garcia. “This opportunity has further motivated me toward helping others."

Vietnam veteran and Broken Warriors Angels director Fred Alvarado witnessed the impact MacArthur students made on dozens of veterans first hand.

“The homeless would come up to me and show me their new clothes and tell me how much they enjoyed their food - especially the service they received,” said Alvarado. “They were so happy they were smiling again. You can't imagine the impact your MacTEACH students have had on them. We're all so thankful."
