Olympic dreams: Churchill student fuels passion for air rifle

It can take years for some people to find their passion and purpose in life. Luck, chance or maybe even destiny led Anne White to her calling in eighth grade when she joined 4-H and picked up an air rifle for the first time. Three years later, the Churchill High School junior is fielding potential scholarship offers and training to make the National Junior Olympic team. White does all of this while taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes, training and competing on her club team.

“Juggling it all is a little difficult but I think I’ve gotten it down pretty well,” said White. “It’s a little bit tough, but I definitely have worked it out to where I’m getting enough time for training and homework.”

White is gearing up to compete against some of the best sharpshooters in the nation at Texas Christian University on Saturday, Jan 11. Anne plans on committing to a collegiate air rifle team, but for now, she’s content with keeping her options open while dreaming of an even bigger goal.

“The goal eventually is to get to the Olympics in 2024,” said White. “I love the mental challenge of it all. They say it’s 90 percent mental and 10 percent technical and that’s what I love about it.”

Anne’s shortlist of goals includes another trip to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado this April, where she’s competed for the last three years. No matter the outcome, she plans to take it all in stride with the quiet confidence that comes from setting your sights on gold.
