Camelot Knights celebrate 50 years of excellence

Camelot Elementary School has seen many changes since it first opened its doors in 1969, but one thing hasn’t changed over the past 50 years: its purpose. Students, family, community members and North East ISD Board of Trustees and Executive Staff gathered together to celebrate Camelot’s golden anniversary on Friday, Nov. 22.

Generations of former students, principals and teachers filled the gymnasium to reminisce about their days at Camelot. Current Principal Wilma Payne described exactly what makes her second home so special.

“What really makes Camelot such a special place is the people – the students and the staff,” said Payne. “Camelot has come a long way in 50 years and a lot has changed. However, one thing has not changed and that’s our purpose: to be a place where children are provided a safe, nurturing learning environment where they are inspired to learn and where they thrive as individuals.”

The program was a blast from the past, with each grade level performing hit songs and students reciting facts from the year Camelot opened in 1969. Dr. Gloria Canada, former Camelot Principal, and Randy Bristow, former Camelot student and current NEEF Board Member, spoke to the audience about some of their fondest memories and the many changes on campus over five decades.

Despite the changing times, love, support and unwavering dedication to its students remains a top priority for the people who make Camelot feel like home.

“Camelot is a placed filled with teachers and staff members who care about our students,” said Payne. “I know that it will continue to do great things for children in the next 50 years.”
