Magnet Night provides pathways for students wanting specialized instruction

Although Angel Marriott was a bit teary eyed at the idea of her children growing up so quickly, all three Huebner Elementary School students couldn’t hold back their excitement walking past the booths at Magnet Night. Hundreds of eager parents and children walked the floors of the Blossom Athletic Center on Wednesday, Nov. 13, anxious to learn and find out whether a magnet program would be a good option.

“Just walking in and the excitement of all of the kids and the people that actually take their time to be here is really touching,” said Marriott. “I am just so glad that there are resources for kids that have different interest. This type of night helps so many families navigate a path that interests their children. This helps me tremendously because already at such a young age there are resources to help nurture and foster that path.”

Marriott’s son Vincent, is only in fourth- grade but he has already expressed an interest in architecture or engineering. Because of this, the entire family came early to support that interest.

North East ISD proudly provides the community with a wide variety of choices in public education, especially through magnet schools and programs. These programs offer a variety of teaching approaches that help customize a student's educational path. On Magnet Night, families are able to meet the students, teachers, and leaders of each these specialized schools and programs.

“While tonight they may see two or three programs that seem fitting for their child, in January, parents will have an opportunity to walk into the campus and get a real feel for it during their open house,” said Ben Peterson, Senior Director of Career and Technical Education. “We want parents to see the specialized curriculum in small learning environments. We offer so many options, from agriculture, technology, construction, health science and many more across the District.”
