Colonial Hills named one of America’s healthiest schools

The results are in, and Colonial Hills Elementary School has been named one of the healthiest schools in the nation for a second time. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation recognized Colonial Hills with a National Healthy Schools Gold Award. This distinction is only given to eight schools in the country.

Colonial Hills is the only school from Texas to be recognized with this honor, and this is the second time they have received the Gold Award.

“Colonial Hills is so proud and honored to be recognized on a national level,” said Jenae Mai, Colonial Hills Principal. “This is such a neat opportunity for us to promote healthy lifestyles, and we are honored to be one of the first schools in Texas to receive this more than once. We’re very proud of everyone involved.”

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation takes many factors into consideration while determining a bronze, silver or gold status. Each school has to maintain a number of healthy best practices, such as exceeding federal nutrition standards for school meals and snacks, offering breakfast daily, incorporating physical activity, implementing District wellness policies and, involving parents and community members in decision making.

Colonial Hills is especially proud of the impact its community garden has made on students, staff and community members. Students are actively involved in planting and harvesting a fall and spring garden. This allows them to sample the fruits and vegetables they had a hand in producing.
