Board names Dr. Maika as lone finalist for Superintendent

In a special meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 3, the North East ISD Board of Trustees named Dr. Sean Maika as the lone finalist for Superintendent of Schools.

Maika officially took over the role of Interim Superintendent on May 6, 2019. Prior to this, he served as Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Campus Administration for two years. He also served as an Executive Director for School Administration and Principal of Harris Middle School. Dr. Maika has 23 years of experience in education.

“I am truly humbled and honored that the Board has named me the Lone Finalist,” said Maika. “I feel fortunate to work for this Board, the approximately 9,000 employees, 65,000 students and all the business and community members who make up the North East ISD.  With two of my own children in our schools, the work isn’t just professional but personal.  I look forward to the work ahead and helping people discover the great educators and programs we have in the North East ISD.”

At the meeting, Board President Shannon Grona expressed her and the Board’s confidence in Dr. Maika’s abilities.

“I have worked very closely with Dr. Maika since May 6, and the Board has seen his strong leadership during the budget process, August Leadership, Convocations and the beginning of school, all of which have gone very well, and which the Board believes are a sign of great things to come,” said Grona. “It is for all of those reasons that the Board believes that Dr. Maika is the perfect person to be Superintendent of North East ISD, and we didn’t feel that we needed to continue his Interim status.  We felt strongly that the time was right to name Dr. Maika our lone finalist.”

State law requires that school boards name the “finalist or finalists” for the position at least 21 days before voting to hire the person.

The board will vote to formally hire Dr. Maika at any meeting after September 24.
