Community partner gives back to Olmos Elementary

Students, parents, and teachers in the Olmos Elementary School community started the 2019-2020 school year with a special delivery from the Summit Christian Center. This generous community partner put out a call for school supply donations and the congregation rose to the occasion for the fifth straight year. The donation provided every single student, from kindergarten to fifth grade, with free school supplies and snack bags.

“We just feel humbled and blessed to know that every single one of those students, regardless of their financial situation, are going to have every tool at their disposal to be successful,” said 5th-grade science teacher Preston Teters. “This allows every student to be at the same exact level when they’re starting school so there’s an even playing field.”

Students and parents weren’t the only ones who benefited from Summit Christian Center’s donation. Olmos teachers were asked to create a wishlist of items for their classrooms so the group could purchase them. On Thursday, Aug. 22, a delivery of microwaves, computer headphones, chairs, electrical pencil sharpeners and more arrived at Olmos. While the teachers all appreciate the donation, they’re most excited to see the impact it has on their students.

“It makes them feel good because when we tell them at Meet the Teacher Night that they don’t need to bring school supplies I know how big of a relief that is for the students and their parents,” said Teters. “They get to start the school year excited because they know that people care about them.”
