A first day of school in July may seem unconventional, but it’s what draws many parents and students into the tightknit Castle Hills Elementary School community. Castle Hills is the only year-round school in North East ISD, which is not only available to its immediate community, but also accepts other students who have applied to attend through School Choice.
Erica Haller was one of many excited parents who dropped her children off for the first day of school on Tuesday, July 23. She moved into the Castle Hills area four years ago and has loved the unorthodox year-round schedule that the school offers.
“We were lucky enough to move here and have Castle Hills be our local school,” said Haller. “The schedule is definitely the biggest draw. It’s so flexible and convenient for parents. Since so many families choose to come here, the parents seem even more engaged and involved than they normally would. Everyone wants their child to succeed and you don’t get that everywhere.”
Castle Hills’ year-round calendar begins at the end of July and ends in May. Since students and parents start the school year early they have two-week breaks, or intersessions, in October and March in addition to regularly scheduled calendar breaks.
Castle Hills is a unique option for NEISD parents and students. It’s a Leader in Me School Lighthouse School that promotes leadership among its staff and students while emphasizing enrichment and extracurricular activities with certified Art and STEM teachers on campus.
“We love Castle Hills and I’m so glad we’re here,” said Haller. “Both of my kids have felt right at home since they started here. The administration is extremely engaged, the principal is fantastic and everyone seems to be on the same page.”
