North East ISD middle school students are staying sharp over the summer through one of the District’s free STEM camps, which incorporates science, technology, engineering, and math in a fun and challenging environment. Incoming sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students are exploring their passion for coding, robotics, and engineering at Bradley Middle School through hands-on activities and computer programs.
Students will spend time learning a little about EV3 robotics, video game design, coding and programming over the week-long camp. Luke Paustian will start 8th-grade at Nimitz Middle School’s STEM Academy in August. He’s excited to carry these skills into the new school year.
“We have tech classes where we learn about coding so I know this will help a lot with that,” said Paustian. “Because of this camp, I’ll already have experience with coding so that's cool. It’s really easy to learn, it's a lot of fun and the teachers are really helpful.”
Engineering teacher Cori McGhee is one of the NEISD instructors volunteering her time at the STEM education camp. She knows first-hand how important skills like programming and coding can be. Before she started teaching at Tex Hill Middle School, she worked as an engineer at Fort Hood.
“These students are future innovators so coming to these kinds of camps is just fantastic,” said McGhee. "They can apply this kind of stuff immediately when they get to high school and then they can get jobs right out of high school or go to the military or go on to college. There are so many options and they already have a plan in place with a passion and hobby that excites them.”
