NEISD artists attend Spotlight Celebration

The annual Spotlight Celebration was held on Sunday, May 19, at the McNay Art Museum.  Schools from across San Antonio participated in the event. Spotlight is an annual program that invites students to make creative responses to one work of art in the museum’s collection. Now in its eighth year, the program engages nearly 5,000 students, educators, and their families in and out of the museum through workshops, tours, and community events. This year, students responded artistically to the Mexican artist Diego Rivera’s Delfina Flores painting.  Their creative efforts were on display at the museum for the entire audience to view.

The students visited the McNay during the Spotlight year in order to view the actual Rivera painting and learn more about his artwork along with Rosemary Hickman – the Semmes Foundation Education Manager of the McNay – traveling to all of the participating schools to work with them as they created their interpretations of the work. A McNay team videotaped the students and teachers preparing for the show and the videos were shown at the celebration. Each school had students introduce their video and then all the attending students were invited to come up to be recognized. Afterwards, the students and their families were allowed to tour the beautiful McNay at their leisure.  On conclusion of this event, the curators of the McNay will be selecting some of the students’ responses/artworks to display in the new Community Gallery.  These choices will be announced in the near future.

North East ISD schools participating:  Roosevelt High School, Bradley Middle School, Coker, Harmony Hills, Camelot, Dellview, Montgomery, Royal Ridge, West Ave, Windcrest, Roan Forest and Vineyard Ranch Elementary Schools.
