Nimitz students celebrate Earth Day with 5K Festival

Nimitz Middle School students spent Earth Day promoting conservation efforts and healthy living at the Earth Day 5K Festival and Healthy Lifestyles Fair. Students and staff involved in the S.O.S. (Students Offering Service) Organization helped lead the event, along with the Nimitz/STEM PTSA.

Seventh-graders Rafael Samandi and Niekos Robbins are members of S.O.S. and they realize the power they have to raise awareness through events like this.

“Everything here is focused on conserving and saving our Earth,” said Robbins. “We’re just out here to make the world a better place. We can’t fix the whole entire world but every little thing we do is a good thing for the Earth.”

Students set up booths on the Nimitz football field to educate students, guests and staff about steps they can take to make a difference in activities like gardening, recycling or solar panels. A grant from the Silver & Black Give Back Team Up Challenge helped fund the event, and San Antonio Spurs mascot Coyote was also there to help kick off the festivities while students collected canned goods to benefit the San Antonio Food Bank.

While the Earth Day Festival was meant to spread awareness, it was just another opportunity for students like Rafael Samandi and Niekos Robbins to serve others.

“We volunteer at ministry shelters, we pick up trash on highways, build garden boxes for out school,” said Robbins. “Just every little thing we can to make the world slightly better is worth striving for.”
