Roosevelt JROTC wins Armed Drill Championship at Angelo State University

The Roosevelt High School JROTC Armed Drill Team was crowned back-to-back champions at Angelo State University’s annual drill meet on Saturday, March 23. The Rough Rider Battalion finished in 1st place overall in the 2019 meet to secure the Armed Drill Team Championship. Roosevelt also won this meet in 2018.

The team competed in Inspection, Regulation, Exhibition, Color Guard, Solo and Tandems, and the Knock Out drill categories. Roosevelt placed 1st in Inspection, Regulation, Exhibition, and the Color Guard competitions. Additionally, cadet Brian Lemus secured a 1st place finish with his individual performance. Cadets Kalob Harwood and Nicholas Gakaba finished 2nd and cadets David Rodriquez and Zaine Somers finished 3rd overall in the Armed Tandem Drill category.

Roosevelt cadets were also given the chance to tour Angelo State University and visit with college cadets, instructors, and military personnel. Senior cadets had the opportunity to receive training in a flight simulator.

“This training was very challenging as you attempt to maintain the aircraft in the air while reading and understanding flight instrumentation and controls,” said cadet Zaine Somers.

Next up, the San Juan Guard Armed Drill team will compete in the Army Nationals Drill Competition in Richmond, Virginia on Saturday, March 30.
