Roosevelt wrestler gets recognized at school assembly

After claiming the UIL State 6A Title in the 195 pound bracket, Roosevelt senior Nathan Alvarez was celebrated at his campus with a champion’s assembly on Friday, March 8.

“Rider Pride is still very much alive here this morning,” said Dr. Sean Maika, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Campus Administration. “On behalf of the school board and executive staff we want to congratulate Nathan on bringing home the state championship back to Roosevelt.”

It was 20 years ago in 1999 that Roosevelt won its first medal in wresting. Since then, the District has had three girls win state championships and a total of seven boys. Now with the addition of Nathan he and his legacy become part of the “elite eight.”

Special guests in attendance at the assembly included Dr. Sean Maika, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Campus Administration, Donna Newman, Associate Superintendent of Instruction and Campus Administration and Karen Funk, Executive Director of Athletics.

“Wrestlers start their day early in the morning and work till late in the afternoon, they clean their own mats do their own laundry and take care of themselves,” said Funk. “They eat all week long and lose weight all week long, they weigh in every week then get on their mats to compete and do their very best. To see Nate get to this ultimate moment and become state champion is an amazing honor."
