Colonial Hills is growing CHEF graduates

Students at Colonial Hills Elementary School are working toward becoming CHEF (Culinary Health Education for Families) graduates. Through grant funding the CHEF Program achieves several healthy objectives including eating breakfast, drinking water, adding fruit and vegetables to their plate and preparing meals at home. Every student on campus will be a CHEF graduate after attending eight modules on topics like protein, grains, dairy, fruit, and vegetables during PE class.

“I am amazed at how many students are willing to try food that they help make or see how it is made,” said PE teacher Terri Pitts. “They try it and they like it!”

Part of the grant funding helped support a field trip for 4th graders to the Botanical Garden. A CHEF kitchen awaited the students along with a beautiful vegetable garden. The students made a healthy open-faced pizza with Basil Pesto using ingredients from the garden.

“I wish all of our students at Colonial Hills could experience what the 4th grade experienced,” said teacher Kathryn Robertson. “They learned so much about nutrition and kitchen etiquette.”
