Astronaut Skypes with KSAT students

Sixth-grade students in the Krueger School of Applied Technologies (KSAT) magnet program enjoyed a chat with astronaut Luca Parmitano over Skype on Friday, Dec. 21. Parmitano is an Italian engineer and astronaut in the European Astronaut Corps for the European Space Agency. He currently works in Houston.

Parmitano is known for having one of the most dangerous explorations ever recorded. His suit once had a malfunction and started filling with water. With his training and prepared mindset, he made his way back to the space shuttle. He is alive and well due to his ability to follow safety procedures. During the Skype session, Parmitano showed off his astronaut attire and explained how he prepared for liftoff. He also shared actual footage from the space station and walked KSAT students through some of his maneuvers.

Some of Parmitano’s current work includes monitoring the function of the brain, the flexibility of the spine and the ability to use medical equipment in space. He is scheduled to return to space July 6, 2019.
