Colonial Hills students benefit from “share table"

A grant from “Fuel Up for 60” is offering students at Colonial Hills Elementary School a new way to drive away hunger. A refrigerator and a "share table" have been installed in the cafeteria, allowing students the choice to select additional menu items. During meal service, students can place any unwanted non-perishable items on a designated sharing table. This gives students who are still hungry the opportunity to have another snack. Any food left at the end of the day will go toward afterschool programs or a nearby non-profit shelter.

“This program is backed by the USDA,” said Terri Pitts, PE coach at Colonial Hills. “Considering that many of the country’s public school children live in poverty, and 30 to 40 percent of US food supply is wasted, it seemed like a no-brainer that ‘share tables’ should be in every school.”
