Roosevelt cadets hone their skills at Somerset meet

The Roosevelt High School JROTC Battalion competed in the “Remember the Vet” skills meet hosted by the Somerset JROTC program on Saturday, Nov. 3. The San Juan Guard armed drill team, Riderettes unarmed drill team, physical fitness team and the rifle team all took part in the competition.

The armed and unarmed drill teams participated in several different categories. During Inspection they were tested on their JROTC knowledge. In the Regulation contest, basic marching movements were put to the test, and during Exhibition they showed off their routines. The physical training team also completed in a variety of exercises and tests of strength and endurance. The rifle team shot from three different positions – standing, kneeling and prone position.

This was the first time every teams competed together at a skills meet this year. After a tough day of competition the battalion received the following placements – 2nd place Junior Varsity Inspection, 3rd place Varsity Color Guard and 3rd place Precision Shooters.

“The rifle team did really good, even though it was kind of a challenge because we haven’t shot at Somerset in a while, but I think we did really good overall,” said cadet Alexis Trotter. “I think we did best in prone. We definitely need to improve in our standing position, however. I think our JV team definitely felt nervous, but I think they did pretty good this being their first competition shooting.”
