Tex Hill students lead November board meeting

The North East ISD Board of Trustees met for its regular public board meeting on Monday, Nov. 12. Two exceptional students from Tex Hill Middle School kicked off the meeting with the invocation and pledge. Sisters Keira and Kylie Mayer both assisted in the invocation and the pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags.

Keira and Kylie excel in the classroom, earning their way into Pre-AP classes and the All-A Honor Roll. Keira is active in theater while Kylie participates in yearbook. Both are outstanding athletes who are known by their coaches, peers and teachers as natural leaders. Keira and Kylie were joined at the board meeting by their mother, Melissa Mayer, and their grandmother, Barbara Lewis.

Recognition of National Healthy Schools Award recipients

The North East ISD School Board took time to recognize the schools that earned a National Healthy Schools Award distinction. To earn a National Healthy Schools Award, schools must improve their nutrition and wellness services and physical activity programs to meet or exceed stringent standards set by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Schools are eligible for Bronze, Silver or Gold awards based on their level of achievement. This year, 461 schools across the nation are being recognized with a National Healthy Schools Award.

Two NEISD schools were recognized, with Montgomery Elementary School earning a 2018 Bronze National Healthy Schools Award and Harmony Hills Elementary School earning a 2018 Silver National Healthy Schools Award.

Recognition of 2018 Bexar County ‘Do the Write Thing’ Challenge winners

Each year 6th, 7th and 8th grade students are invited to participate in the “Do the Write Thing” challenge, a writing initiative sponsored by the San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. Earlier this year Bexar County Judge Antonia Ateaga and her selection committee evaluated 3,000 entries from San Antonio students.

The North East ISD School Board acknowledged the accomplishments of Kathleen Torgerson and Andrew Lockett, who are now students at MacArthur High School. As 8th graders at Garner Middle School their outstanding essays sent them to Washington, D.C. to represent San Antonio at the National Campaign to Stop Violence this summer. Both students’ essays were acknowledged with the highest honor of “Ambassador Girl and Boy.”

Kathleen was accompanied by her parents, Christina and Darrell Torgerson. Andrew was accompanied by his parents, Carla and Dale Lockett.
