Reagan HS junior ‘warms’ hearts with blanket making classes

It would be easy to assume most high school students would rather sleep in than wake up early for charity work on a Saturday morning. But that’s no obstacle for Sam Sanchez, founder of ‘Sam’s Covers.’ On Saturday, Nov. 10, more than 100 third grade students from North East ISD joined the Reagan High School junior for a blanket-making class. Sanchez created ‘Sam’s Covers’ when she was just twelve years old.

“What keeps me doing this every year is seeing the kids in action,” said Sanchez. “When they come up and tell me why they are volunteering and why they want to give back, it puts things in perspective for me.”

‘Sam’s Covers’ is a non-profit organization that seeks to show children in area transition homes and shelters that people care about them. To date, the organization has donated over 1,000 blankets.

“We are helping our community for the kids in need, because it looks like it is going to be a cold winter,” said Vineyard Ranch student Norma Adriaensens.

This is one of several classes that Sam has planned before the holiday season. She will be making a delivery of blankets to local charities during the Thanksgiving Break. Sam believes that blankets provide children a sense of comfort that they may not have while transitioning from homes to shelters at such a young age.
