Students spell their way to victory

North East ISD students took part in the District’s annual Spanish Spelling Bee Wednesday, Nov. 7 and Friday, Nov. 9. The top spellers advanced from competitions held at their individual campuses, and faced off at Madison High School’s AMP Arena. 

Students from NEISD middle schools faced off first, with Ana Guerrero of Lopez Middle School outlasting the competition to finish in first place. The winning word was “neutral” which means unbiased. Erik Aviles of Garner Middle School came in second.

Laura Leiva of Reagan High School finished in first place in the high school spelling division after spelling the winning word “regurgitacion” which translates to regurgitation. Fernanda Castillo Hernandez of MacArthur High School came in second place.

Jair Rangel Leon from Jackson-Keller Elementary School came in first place, with Naomi Alvarez Ruiz from El Dorado finishing second place. The winning word for Jair was “afortunado" which means lucky. 

The first-place winner from each division will move on to participate in the annual Education Service Center Region 20 Spanish Spelling Bee Saturday, Feb. 2.
