Krueger students commemorate Dia de los Muertos

Krueger Middle School students have been hard at work on a Dia de los Muertos ofrenda. Two Day of the Dead altars have been assembled at Krueger to honor and celebrate friends and family who have died.

On Halloween, students started bringing photos of friends, family and pets who have passed away to place on the ofrenda in Diana Morales’ art class. On All Saints Day, Thursday Nov. 1, students remembered the children who have passed. They also painted their faces as skulls, a Mexican tradition that is symbolic of overcoming your fears.

“They all have fears as middle school kids and having one of these painted faces on is just symbolic of overcoming your fears,” said Morales. “It also ties them back to their culture because a lot of these kids have this through their grandmas or mothers.”

On Friday, Nov. 2, All Souls Day was recognized, allowing time to honor adults who have passed. Students were also encouraged to bring favorite food or snacks of the loved ones they were honoring. Morales started a tradition of creating ofrendas for students and faculty when she started teaching at Krueger 15 years ago.
