Eagle Scout service project benefits Nimitz students

Cristán Gutierrez, a senior at LEE High School’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academy, used his Eagle Scout project to give back to his former middle school. Gutierrez spent three days in August handcrafting and installing three wooden benches for students to enjoy at Nimitz Middle School.

Installing the benches is part of his Eagle Scout service project, which is required of all scouts working to retain the rank of Eagle Scout. With the help of his father, Gutierrez managed the planning, paperwork, and construction of the project for six months prior to installation. Scouts from Troop 226 also assisted with the cutting, sanding, painting and assembly of the benches.

It has taken Gutierrez nearly 10 years to complete his journey to become an Eagle Scout, and he couldn’t have done it without a strong support system full of his teachers, family and friends.

“I would not be nearly as close as I am right now to receiving my Eagle Scout rank, if it weren’t for them pushing me along,” said Gutierrez.

Gutierrez is expected to receive his Eagle Scout rank by the end of 2018.
