Preparing for the future

A new study by Intelligent.com suggests hiring managers are hesitant to hire recent college graduates because they struggle to handle the workload and lack professional work habits.

North East ISD works to make sure our students are ready for the workforce through programs like AVID, our Career and Technical Education courses, our newly created MacUNITED early college high school and the Reagan Incubator.

“The incubator shows you the real world,” said Reagan High School junior Serena Ramirez. “It’s a great starting point for us to really learn how to get into business. It teaches you a lot of different things like real-life application.”

The Reagan Incubator class is full of passionate and imaginative students like Ramirez.

She and her classmates, Sricharvi Rayala and Nihitha Suri, are working on a pebble-like device to help with social anxiety. In this class, students also work on fashion brands, snack shops selling treats from around the world, and various other passion projects.

These student-led teams work to create, develop and pitch products to create a lucrative business.

“I love this class. It’s my favorite class,” said Ramirez. “We are excited to see where this goes into next year. It really opened my eyes and showed me this is something I really want to do. I want to make a success out of it.”

These are students who are excited to come to class. They are excited to learn “power skills” like interviewing for jobs, pitching to investors, setting a schedule and sticking to it.

“This has been a really helpful class. It really helped me out a lot in how to manage a business,” said senior Diego Alvarez.

Alvarez and his classmates, Jesus Ramirez and Luis Perezsandi, have worked on their business plan for two years. They’ve created a Yerba Mate drink and hope the business they’ve started building will continue to grow after graduation.

“It’s a very good and big opportunity and it’s very different than any other class,” said Alvarez. “It gives you a lot of information and helps you to think creatively on your own and actually go through a creative process. It’s offering us life skills.”
