Student teachers get prepped for first job

North East ISD administration honored and thanked the dozens of aspiring teachers who have been student teaching this school year. NEISD’s Human Resources Department hosts the celebration. But it’s more than just cookies and congratulations; the HR department walked the future educators through the application process and offered them tips to ensure they would put their best foot forward in the interview. Several NEISD principals were also there to tell the future applicants what they are looking for and how to stand out in the crowd of potential hires. Their advice was invaluable.

“Have a question for us, at least one question,” said Jackson-Keller Elementary Principal Anna Nicolai-Knopf. “Ask me a question about my school. That shows me that you’ve studied my school and that you are ready to invest in my school. And now the ball is in your court, and you are in control of getting the information you need to make your decision.”

In attendance was student teacher Nathan Smith. He’s been working at Windcrest Elementary School. It turns out he went to school there when he was a child and has been working across the hall from his former kindergarten teacher, Christy Berry. Smith was recently surprised with a job offer to return and work full-time at Windcrest as soon as he graduates.

“When I was a kid, I fell in love with the teachers and the community. Mrs. Berry was so caring and loving,” said Smith. “And it really made me want to be the same kind of teacher.”

The student teachers and cooperating teachers also got to hear from the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Sean Maika, and Board of Trustees President Shannon Grona. Both echoed how vital the work of an educator is and how rewarding that work can be. They also left the crowd with this advice: “If the Superintendent offers you a job… say yes!”

If you want to join the NEISD team, there will be a career fair on Saturday, April 15th, at the Littleton Gym starting at 9 am. Interviews will happen on-site, but you can begin the application process now at neisd.net/jobs.
