Meet the newest TMEA Distinguished Administrator

Principal Gary Comalander receives his TMEA award with NEISD logo

Join us in congratulating the newest Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Distinguished Administrator recipient – Johnson High School Principal Gary Comalander!

TMEA created this designation to honor the administrators who have been instrumental in preserving quality music education programs at their schools. Comalander was celebrated Tuesday night during North East ISD’s Fall Marching Festival at Heroes Stadium.

Johnson Band Director Jarrett Lipman nominated his principal for this award. He is thankful that Comalander continued the tradition of supporting fine arts programs as soon as he took over in 2019 and has been a positive support system every step of the way.

The following excerpt from his nomination form says it all.

“Since 2019, Mr. Comalander has continued attending UIL events for Fine Arts groups across the campus and regularly visits our classrooms and practices. He is out of his office, walking the halls throughout the day, spending time with students, and working tirelessly to motivate our community to excel.

In 2020, when we learned we’d won the UIL 6A State Championship, Mr. Comalander was down on the field with us, hugging each director and proudly sharing in the celebration. He is always available morning, noon, and night for a phone call and is never too busy to listen when we need support.

Mr. Comalander promised he would continue our last principal's legacy of supporting Fine Arts at the highest level. He has kept his word, and our programs have continued to thrive under his leadership. We are so grateful for his love and guidance.”

Congratulations, Mr. Comalander, and thank you for all you do!
