NEISD more than doubles Purple Star designated campuses.

Purple star over camp

North East ISD continues to grow its support for military students and their families.

NEISD is proud to have 59 campuses with Purple Star Designation. That is up from 19 campuses last year. This Texas Education Agency designation goes to schools that excel in meeting the needs of military students and their families.

Part of our District’s success in helping support our military families is our Student 2 Student (S2S) program. By the end of the year, it will be at every NEISD school. S2S is an award-winning program connecting civilian students with newly-enrolled military children to ease the transition of being the “new kid” at school. They tour the campus together, eat lunch together and answer questions that come with moving to a new place.

Nimitz Middle School was one of the first schools in NEISD to be awarded a Purple Star Designation. Their S2S team is 240 members strong, was awarded the Middle School Team of the Year last year and recognized at the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) Global Summit in Washington DC.

S2S students standing together“When a new student comes to our school, we get them connected. We’ve got kids in every grade level, every class,” said S2S Sponsor Robert Gonzalez. “We’ve got students who speak Congolese, Spanish, Pashto, so we can take that extra layer off and break it away. They are integrated so fast.”

Seventh-grader Jade Garcia is one of the leaders on that nationally-recognized Nimitz team. She has made many new friends because of S2S and found a passion in helping others.

“I feel helpful. I know I can help other students feel comfortable and have some type of friendship at our school. It just feels great,” said Garcia. “It shows how students can be helpful to other students and affect their lives.”
