Today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day

Today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Student with teacher who is dressed like a pirateSo, shiver me timbers and listen up to a tale of fun, excitement and learning.

Students at Tex Hill Middle School got quite the swashbuckling lesson today.

In nearly every hallway, English teachers could be seen sporting their best pirate garb.

But inside the classrooms is where the magic really happened.

“It was actually pretty cool,” said one sixth-grader.

English Teacher Dana Williams really immersed her sixth-grade students in the lesson. She dressed like she just walked off a pirate ship. She also hardly broke character speaking like a pirate during most day. She even created a video involving the librarian, choir teacher and dance students to really get the kids excited about learning.

“Kids learn best through experiences that are fun and memorable,” said Williams. “Talk Like a Pirate Day is both! I can hook them in with activities that teach important lessons about dialect, dialogue, characterization, history, ballads, and most importantly how to separate fact from fiction all under the guise of fun and games.”

Students were giggling, sharing and really getting into English class, even if they didn’t realize it. By the end of class, they learned some new words while writing a sea shanty and created their pirate names, which taught them about alliteration and adjectives.

It takes all hands on deck (no pun intended) to create a fun and innovative learning environment and the staff at Tex Hill is doing it #theNEISDway.
