Passion for STEM rooted in NEISD classrooms

Shaunna holding the NEISD way sign in her classroomShaunna Garner can’t envision life without North East ISD.

She currently teaches eighth grade science at Tex Hill Middle School. But her history with our District goes back to grade school. She grew up attending Coker Elementary School, Bradley Middle School and Churchill High School.

She’ll never forget the moment her passion for all things STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) ignited inside Marcia Kemble’s science class at Churchill.

“My love for science came from my high school science classes. Mrs. Kemble was my Biology II AP teacher. I remember being really excited when we learned about DNA. She did a great job of bringing a hands-on aspect to learning.”

Like Kemble before her, Garner is now igniting new STEM passions as an educator – and she’s raising the bar. She was one of several San Antonio educators who spent part of their summer learning from experts at Texas Biomed. Thanks to a grant opportunity, advanced researchers studying infectious diseases at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute will share their work with Garner and her students.

“We develop activities that are on their level and fun for them that will still get the point across,” explained Garner. “We try to make it very hands-on and exciting.”

Professional development #theNEISDway means our students are better for it. At Tex Hill, our kids leave Garner’s classroom prepared and supported for the next step into high school.

“I like getting to know them before they go off to high school so we can maintain that relationship. They come by to see me, send emails and last year I got graduation invites and that was really special.”
