It’s not an easy time to be an educator.
North East ISD’s newest crop of first-year teachers are stepping in during a nationwide staffing shortage in many positions – including teachers.
We NEED dedicated educators like Daphne De La Fuente and Mayan Alcantar. Both are proud products of NEISD and are about to enter their first year in education.
Alcantar will soon start her teaching career at Ridgeview Elementary School. She attended Olmos Elementary School and Nimitz Middle School before graduating from Lee High School in 2017. Her desire to impact her community as a bilingual teacher brought her back to NEISD.
“At Ridgeview, we have a lot of kids from Honduras and Mexico and they were in our pre-K classroom and it made me realize how important our bilingual teachers are,” said Alcantar. “We’re also there to help translate for our parents and our community, and I feel like I can better serve my community by being in the classroom with our kids.”
De La Fuente attended Woodstone Elementary School, Wood Middle School and Madison High School growing up. She’s getting ready for her first year teaching at Churchill High School.
“I’m eager to start school already! Everybody assumes you’re going to be nervous, but we’re excited to get in the classroom and meet our students,” said De La Fuente. “I had the best time in school growing up, so I want to create that experience for the next generation to enjoy as much as I did.”
