Countdown to Cap and Gown
“It was like love at first sight.”
That’s how Madison High School senior Dyllan Mendoza describes his relationship with soccer.
He started playing when he was two years old.
Running up and down the pitch – chasing a dream not yet realized.
Now, that hard work and passion are taking him to the next level.
Dyllan is headed to St. Mary’s University to play soccer.
He’s also entered into an Academy Agreement with San Antonio FC and the United Soccer League (USL). The agreement allows Dyllan to train and compete in matches with professionals without affecting his collegiate eligibility.
“This last year was just a roller coaster of emotions,” said Dyllan. “The biggest memories are not just the games we won but the ones we lost as well. They taught us lots of life lessons and really brought us together.”
His coaches could not be prouder of him, and they are excited to see him play at St. Mary’s and with the San Antonio FC. But his leadership on and off the field will be missed.
“His presence has elevated the soccer in our District. It’s elevated the play here at Madison,” said Madison Soccer Coach Glenn Hitzfelder. “To have somebody like Dyllan come in and be a leader on and off the field, it’s a big part of why we’ve had so much success.”
As Dyllan heads to the big leagues, he offers this advice to upcoming student athletes:
“Have patience. Not everyone has the same pathway as others. My coaches always told me not to rush it. Everything comes at its time. Be patient and value yourself.”
We wish Dyllan and the rest of the class of 2025 the best of luck as they continue their journey in pursuit of their dreams.
