On the surface, you may not think that an 18-year-old and a 65-year-old have much in common. But there’s a genuine bond between four North East ISD seniors and the members of the Adult Learners in Retirement (ALIR). Both are lifelong learners with a passion for continuing their education.
ALIR is an all-volunteer organization that fosters lifelong learning for seniors over the age of 50. Members contribute to the scholarship fund through their annual dues, but they also contribute donations throughout the year.
The ALIR Bill Howland Scholarship Award is named after a beloved member who had a passion for education and lifelong learning. Four members of the Class of 2022 received a check for $2,500. That’s a total of $10,000 raised to help NEISD students with college expenses.
Churchill High School seniors Ashley Villarreal and Christian Dominquez and Madison High School seniors Seth Lackey and Delaney Morrison accepted the scholarship during a ceremony on Thursday, April 28.
“We have courses that we teach for seniors which is continuing education,” said ALIR Scholarship Committee Member Tom Colbourn. “We want to encourage them to be lifelong learners and to continue on in their educational journey.”
Ashley, Christian, Delaney and Seth were chosen out of 27 total applicants.
