Looking for a pen, she found her passion

“They were handing out super cool pens, but then I looked into it and saw this is actually a really cool program.”

MacArthur High School Senior Esperanza Geltman went to check out the MAC UP program looking for a cool pen, but she found her passion.

“Initially, I was interested in marine biology, and then I learned I really liked working with kids,” said Geltman.  “So, then I started thinking, I might want to teach science. Now I am on the pathway to teach middle school math and science.”

MAC UP is a unique, cost-saving option for students interested in becoming educators. Thanks to North East ISD’s partnership with the University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA), our students can graduate with 50+ college credit hours, save up to 93% of college tuition costs through dual enrollment courses and get free transportation between MacArthur and the UTSA campus.

“It’s been great. The cut prices and gaining hours from that and being able to transfer those hours if I don’t go to UTSA. There are just so many benefits -- the head start -- helping me find my path -- helping me discover where I wanted to go. It’s awesome. Not everyone goes into teaching, but this really helped me find what I wanted to do.”

Join us for a MAC UP Open House event on Wednesday, Jan. 25, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at MacArthur High School to learn more about our program and partnership with UTSA. Visit neisd.net/macup to learn more about the program.

Applications to join MAC UP and other NEISD magnets are currently open. The deadline to apply is Feb. 6, 2023. Visit neisd.net/magnetprograms to apply today.
