From Questions to Discoveries: DATA Program Shines at Inaugural Science Fair
What’s the fastest way to cool a soda?
How do stars form, live and die?
Who types faster, boys or girls?
These are just a few of the questions that Design and Technology Academy (DATA) students at Ed White Middle School set out to answer for the inaugural DATA Middle School Science Fair.
This wasn’t your average science fair. DATA students from Roosevelt High School were heavily involved in organizing and hosting the event. The creativity, problem-solving skills, and passion for STEM education was on display as students showed off their experiments.
The high school students were tasked with judging each project, adding stickers based on their determination, and quizzing the younger students about their experiment. Roosevelt senior Alanis Carpio was one of the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) serving as an organizer and judge. She says it made perfect sense to bring the event to DATA at Ed White.
“We thought bringing the science fair to DATA at Ed White would be a great fit, because if these students continue the path to Roosevelt, they will have to do this there,” said Alanis. “So, it’s preparing them for the future and giving them a preview of what it’s like at Roosevelt.”
Approximately 100 DATA middle school students signed up to participate. The science fair allowed them the chance to pursue an experiment they’re passionate about while being mentored by Roosevelt students who were once in their shoes.
